Loved and Vintage Tools

Thought it would be great to share a  sneak view into the studio, these shots are of some loved and vintage tools that are used in making some of Wild Crow Farm's Pottery. The older brushes belonged to my late grandma, so have special meaning when used.  The raku bowl has been with me for ages, and holds water when pottery is wheel thrown.  The trimming and shaping tools sit in a vintage brown glass loaf pan, ready to add form and texture. The mixture of the old treasured tools and the newer ones is a centering experience in bringing new life and beauty into simple balls of earth.

Lake County Diamonds, Lake County California

Adding Lake County Diamonds as a local feature to some of Wild Crow Farm Pottery, we are proud to introduce more information on these beautiful stones.  These clear gem stones are a natural gift from our local volcano, Mt. Konocti, and are only found in Lake County California. The literature varies, but on a scale of hardness (diamonds being a 10), these seem to be rated between 7-8. Known also as Moon Tears and Konocti Diamonds, there's a local Pomo Indian legend about these stones.  According to this legend, the Moon fell in love with a Pomo Indian chief. The moon could not be with the chief because her duties…

Care of Handmade Ceramic Stoneware Pottery

Wild Crow Farm's beautiful new handmade pieces of stoneware are dishwasher, microwave and oven safe unless noted specifically on individual listings.  Thermal shock is a variation in temperature which causes tension in a material. It frequently causes breakage in materials, and is most common in brittle materials such as ceramics. This is a process that takes place abruptly when there is a sudden variation of temperature, either from hot to cold or vice versa. This means that if you pour boiling water in your cup too quickly, or put a cold piece of pottery in the oven, it may cause small cracks in the glass glazes.  Please change temperatures slowly.…

A Brief Summary of Handmade Pottery Costs

Occasionally, we've been asked about the pricing on our beautiful OOAK handmade pieces.  Why can't it be priced like big box store pottery?  Here are several considerations as to why our ceramic stoneware is priced differently. 1) We drive 4 hours to pick up the clay ~ unless it is mined locally ~ taking a few more hours to sieve, grind, flocate and knead. 2)  Unload clay into the shop. 3)  Weigh out amount needed for each piece. 4)  Wedge (knead) clay. 5)  Form and design the shape.  This can take up to 3 hours. 6)  Remove and let dry 24 - 48 hours; depending on humidity. 7) Trim the…

Wild Crow Farm’s Handmade OOAK Pottery vs. Mass-produced Pottery

Wild Crow Farm Pottery’s handmade pottery differs from mass-produced pottery in some ways that a home-cooked meal differs from a frozen meal out of the grocery store freezer, or in the way that home grown vegetables taste so much better. Handmade pottery is lovingly crafted in a manner that takes more time, has ingredients in it that the creator has chosen with care, and offers qualities that could never be reached with something mass-produced. Sometimes it doesn't look as polished or perfect as a manufactured item, but it has soul, and the imperfections give the pieces a certain charming character, never to be duplicated. Our handmade pottery is “one-of-a-kind” since…

Clay-Body Vitrification

Definition: Vitrification is the process of melting that different types of clay and glazes go through as they are fired.

In a fully vitrified clay-body, the spaces between refractory particles are completely filled up with glass, fusing the particles together and making the clay body impervious to water. Check the manufacturer for the correct firing schedule Ensure your kiln is firing to the correct temp, old coils can cause problems Add glaze to the piece and fire it again at a higher temp Change clay-body for future pieces Using an improperly vitrified clay-body can cause "crawling" and "pitting", not all glazes will react the same
